We've been busy during these first six weeks of library - not just reading great stories and talking about what we've read, but exploring these books in more creative ways as well. See what we've been up to by watching the video! This past week, Ms. Bery asked 4th graders to design their own libraries. Before students began working on their blueprints, we spent some time collaboratively brainstorming some ideas using a website called Linoit - Ms. Bery is really impressed by what students came up with and is now thinking of how to incorporate some of their suggestions into the library. Check out what they had to say!
In honor of fall and Halloween, this week in 1st and 2nd grade we're reading Creepy Carrots by Aaron Reynolds. In this delightfully dark tale, a rabbit finds himself outwitted by some very clever, very creepy carrots. After reading the story, students made their very own creepy carrots! Click the class links to see the slideshows! We've had a busy three weeks in the library since the school year started! Ms. Bery has spent time introducing herself to the students, and getting to know them as well - we had a great question and answer session during the first library time with pre-K through 4th grade. We also read the book Sky Color by Peter Reynolds in every elementary class. Our goal for this year in library is to learn, grow, explore and create in lots of different ways, just like Marisol, the main character in this story. In week 2, we focused on expectations for behavior in library. Pre-K-2nd grade explored the question "what if everybody did that?" after reading the book of the same title. In 1st and 2nd grades, and we even came up with our own lists of library expectations. Common expectations included "make smart choices," "respect others," and "turn our listening ears on." Ms. Bery feels confident that these expectations will help us have a wonderful year in library. 3rd and 4th graders got a kick out of the book The Secret Knowledge of Grownups, by David Wisnewski. We laughed at the idea of man-eating vegetables and live mattresses, leaping from mountain to mountain, had a great discussion on whether he book was fact or fiction. We've also begun to use our new library centers. Library centers are educational but fun activities that students can do after they've checked out their books or if they forgot to bring their books back. Ms. Bery plans to change the centers every few weeks, but the first station was called "Animals Should Definitely NOT Check Out Books!" Ms. Bery gave a presentation during library about why animals should not check out books (ex: whales should not check out books because a book would always get wet with a whale). Students then got to think of their own examples and illustrate them at the stations - there are some really creative students at Carlisle! Check out some of their wonderful work on the bulletin board. |
